Chapter Fourteen

There were no sounds of sirens, but the crowd couldn’t miss the uniformed police officers that showed up. All the guests were ushered from the dance floor to the tables. After returning from upstairs, a police sergeant explained that an incident had occurred. The guests were asked to remain seated until they were cleared to leave. The sergeant came over to speak with Matt, Maggie and myself. They again confirmed who had made the call and then asked exactly what I had seen. He said a detective would be with us shortly. They positioned a police officer at the bottom of the staircase to keep anyone from going upstairs. What a mess.

I went and took a seat at a nearby table, hoping that my knees would stop shaking. Maggie and Matt remained over by the door.

“Hey Maggie, Matt. What’s going on here?” I heard the voice, although it seemed like it was a million miles away.

“This is Matt’s sister’s wedding. Emily was upstairs looking for a bathroom and she found a body in a storage closet.”

“Emily? Where is she?”

His voice was now a little louder, bringing me out of my trance. I got up and started weaving my way over to him, “Alex,” he looked in my direction.

“Are you alright? What is going on here?”

“Yes, I’m fine, just a little shaken. I had been upstairs watching the dancing and decided it was time to go home. I started looking around for a bathroom and instead opened a door to a storage room. I saw a man’s shoe. It was partially hidden by some boxes, but I could tell there was a body wearing it. I tried not to touch anything, but I did touch his leg. Alex, the body was cold. I came back down here and Matt called the police.”

“So, who is this man?”

The shock was wearing off and my crime solving genes were kicking in. “I don’t know. I didn’t see the face, but if I had to guess I’d say it’s Jackson Granger.”

“What makes you say that?”

“Jackson was supposed to be the best man, but he didn’t show up for the rehearsal dinner last night or the wedding. One of the other groomsmen said he didn’t answer his phone; it was going straight to voicemail. Who else could it be?”

“Well, I’m sure we’ll find out soon enough. What else can you tell me?”

“I was having dinner last night at The Three Pines, and he was there for a while. He was sitting at the bar drinking, quite a bit in fact. Then he got a phone call and left.”

“Any idea who he was on the phone with?”

Matt spoke up, “It could have been from Scott. I know Scott had to call him and remind him again to go pick up the tuxes. Jackson was supposed to have picked them up earlier in the day, but hadn’t yet.”

“Olivia told me the same thing,” Maggie said. “What best man doesn’t go pick up the tuxes. Here it was the day before the wedding.
